6-Day Life Drawing

In this workshop the emphasis will be on exploring more in depth the concepts essential to mastering the art of drawing and its importance and relevance to painting. We will cover the importance of studying all aspects of the portrait, including more intense study of the Watts Atelier Abstraction System. Anatomical as well as bone knowledge will be studied in order to more efficiently use the abstraction to locate quickly and efficiently as you navigate the human head. We will learn to work from photos as well as life using comparative measuring. We will do quick-sketch heads and longer studies. As for figure drawing we will again be visiting abstractions and the anatomical significance behind them. We will be doing 20 minute lay-ins from models as well as shorter quicksketchs and longer studies will also be emphasized. We will use Master studies to help understand other artist’s calligraphy and how it can be used to push your drawings to the next level. The importance of memory work will also be addressed form model and photo. We will delve deeper into the tonal method and how it adapts to painting during this intensive 8 days of drawing. You will be able to do 9 hours a day for the duration if you wish. This will be a great opportunity for all of you wanting to work towards proficiency in your drawing.

 

INCLUDES: 6 hours of instruction each day, extra 3 hour open model session in the evenings, small student to teacher ratio (10 to 1), frequent demos, one-on-one work on each student's piece as well as critiques, morning coffee and bagels.

In this workshop we will focus on both portrait and figure painting. Exercises will include learning to properly pick and work from your own as well as others photo reference, mastering monochrome, inventing color from monochrome reference, quick-sketch painting both head and figure, long pose head and figure(3 hour poses), painting features, studying anatomy in paint and the significance to studying master studies as you develop both your eye and personal style.

 

INCLUDES: 6 Hours of instruction daily with an extra 3 hour uninstructed model time in the evenings to practice the days lessons; small teacher to student ratio (1 to 10); frequent demonstrations as well as personal critiques; morning coffee and bagels.

Join Jeff Watts and instructors of Watts Atelier for this rare opportunity to immerse yourself in 8 days of drawing and painting with these truly gifted instructors.  We will cover a wide range of concepts including setting up the 4 palettes students should master to avoid major pitfalls, how to break down and study the masters in both painting and drawing, the importance of gouache as a training tool for oil, anatomy, gesture painting and even touch on landscape and still life.  Jeff will demonstrate daily as one of his instructors assists him to assure maximum assistance for each workshop participant.  The emphasis will be on showing participants firsthand what designing and executing a training plan for the visual artist entails.  This workshop will deliver practical exercises and advice that will communicate how working professionals got where they are and how you can as well.  Come prepared for long days of intense learning, demonstrations and one-on-one instruction.
